Think Stubbs + Wootton: imagine everyone’s favorite
casual shoe in comfortable rubber. Forget garden clogs
- they don't work for a real gardener. How many times have
you stepped backward and fallen out of them or has a slimy leaf
crawled inside? And let's face it, laced walking shoes, or Balmorals
as they are properly called, are too heavy and you can't really ever clean them.
Forget actually anything you have to zip, tie or lace. These also have great
ripply soles that track not one ounce of mud into the house - no sloggers
these! And let's face it, the French have a way with shoes and these
are made by the classic French house of Sarrazienne and
are the best looking man-made shoes you will ever find.

Hand-laced, knee high, custom made (a la Vita Sackville-West) riding boots
look fabulous, but they are a pain in the ass and even I have conceded that pull-
on rubber boots are the only way to go in the garden. But I can't stand those big
green-snub-toed Wellingtons or any of their Ralph Laurenized counterparts
- too heavy and too ugly and too flat. The 1 1/2" heel gives just that extra little
zing. I first spotted them in the charming French town of Biarritz, right
across the street from the Hermes store, and should have bought every
color. After ten years, they have not cracked nor split nor let me down in
any way and of course, everyone always comments on my chic boots.
